THE CRAFTSMANSHIP OF YKK 05

YKK’s commitment to quality in the minutiae

Hey, look at the part where this metal zipper is closed. Don’t you see little gaps? That’s right! YKK’s zippers are precise, so I thought the parts would fit together exactly.

Deliberately created “gaps”

There are evenly spaced gaps!

There are evenly spaced gaps you can see where the elements mesh together.
In fact, these gaps are a carefully calculated design feature, intended to ensure the smooth opening and closing of the zipper.

The gaps are neither too small nor too large.

With gaps that are too large, the teeth will become misaligned; too small, and the zipper will move stiffly and no longer be smooth. These gaps are essential for smoothly opening and closing the zipper.

YKK’s engineers strive diligently every single day to accurately replicate measurements like these sorts of gaps. I see. What are some examples of those efforts?

Conducting tests to pursue better quality!

YKK conducts repeated tests in order to ensure that dimensions are precisely reproduced and to maintain quality, even under various conditions.

Durability test for opening and closing zippers in both directions

This test assesses how well a zipper maintains its functionality when repeatedly opened and closed, while also being simultaneously pulled vertically and horizontally.

Chain lateral pull strength test

This test involves pulling a zipper chain until it breaks in a lateral direction, thereby evaluating its resistance to lateral tensile stress.

Even the tiniest gaps and tests contain all sorts of hidden ingenuity. We make daily efforts from various angles to achieve better product quality.
