SUSTAINABILITY NEWS RELEASE

May 27, 2019 "Children of the Sea" Calligraphy Exhibition - A Joint Project by STUDIO4°C and Craft Lab by YKK

Craft Lab by YKK ("Craft Lab"), an event and community facility operated by YKK Corporation (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Hiroaki Otani), will be holding, between May 31 (Friday) and June 15 (Saturday), an exhibition of calligraphy by persons with intellectual disabilities.

This exhibition features works by 41 students of calligrapher Reiko Iharada who, for the past 24 years, has been teaching calligraphy classes in Yokohama for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The works on exhibit feature words from Children of the Sea, a manga written and illustrated by Daisuke Igarashi (publisher: Shogakukan), that left an impression on the student calligraphers. The works by the students, who express themselves freely through the calligraphy, are highly expressive and look like pieces of art. The bold yet warm works full of character are being exhibited in a unique manner that utilizes zippers and hook and loop fasteners.

This exhibition, which commemorates the June 7 (Friday) theatrical release of the animated version of Children of the Sea, was made possible by collaboration with the film's animation studio, STUDIO4°C (Representative: Eiko Tanaka). The trailer for Children of the Sea will also be shown at Craft Lab.
