SUSTAINABILITY NEWS RELEASE

September 1, 2016 YKK80 Building Receives the BELS (Building-Housing Energy-efficiency Labeling System) Evaluation Top Rating of 5 Stars

On Aug. 29, 2016, YKK Fudosann Co., Ltd. (Head office: 1 Kanda Izumi-cho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, 101-8642, Japan) received the top rating of 5 Stars from BELS(*), a building energy efficiency performance labeling system determined by the Association for Housing Performance Evaluation & Labeling, for its YKK80 Building, the head office building of YKK and YKK AP.

Evaluation agencies registered with the Association for Housing Performance Evaluation & Labeling conduct the BELS evaluation and labeling. The BELS-registered agency Center for Better Living performed the evaluation at YKK80 Building, which earned the performance evaluation above.

In February of this year, YKK80 Building became the first office building in Japan to receive the "Platinum" rating from LEED-CS, an international certification system for environmentally friendly buildings and area developments developed and operated by the U.S. Green Building Council. The BELS evaluation re-confirmed this strong energy efficiency performance.

We will continue working on environmentally-friendly management and business activities in the future.

(*) BELS (Building-Housing Energy-efficiency Labeling System):
BELS is one of the third-party verification systems established by the 2016 Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Notification No. 489 "Guidelines concerning the labeling of building energy consumption performance" (hereinafter "Guidelines") based on Article 7 of the Act on the Improvement of Energy Consumption Performance of Buildings (Building Energy Efficiency Act).
It is a system where BELS-registered agencies (65 agencies as of Sep. 1, 2016) registered with the Association for Housing Performance Evaluation & Labeling conduct the energy efficiency performance evaluations and labeling. A star rating is given according to the labeling content and each corresponding BEI value (Building Energy Index; a value obtained by dividing the design primary energy consumption by the standard primary energy consumption, that acts as an index for energy efficiency standards) based on the Guidelines.
In office buildings like YKK80 Building, a BEI value ≤ 0.6, or a decrease of 40% or more compared to standard energy efficiency standards, earns the top rating of "Five Stars."
