You and almost everyone else are familiar with the YKK AP ads in Japan that say, “YKK thinks about windows.” These windows and doors, the “openings” in a home are our mainstay products. Talk about technological advancement, and tend to think of automobiles and personal computers, but in actuality, windows have advanced a long way as well. Frames are made of plastic as well as of aluminum, glass may be “Low-E,” which insulates heat rays, and advances in locks and shutters come on a daily basis. Nowadays, keyless locks on front doors are no longer unusual. Our strengths are in “quality” and “technology,” so we can use them to increase the market in home “openings” with higher added value products. This is the basic strategy for us at YKK AP.

While new housing starts decline, we have begun to meet the challenge of the growing housing reform market. YKK AP is in the forefront of the “window replacement” movement. We’re creating our own business model with distribution channels like “MADO Shops” that can replace the windows in a home in as little as two hours. Energy conservation and anti-burglar safety are important, but new windows can also be healthier. People who have “replaced” their windows and gained all the advantages from them says, “Our home is so much more comfortable now.” Targeting these end users is also part of our new challenge. Entering new markets can sometimes entail overcoming high hurdles, but success brings great satisfaction.

Speeding up global business is an important strategy. For example, in China, even if you only look at new housing starts for the richer class, there are just as many as in all of Japan put together. And growth is not only in Asia, of course, advanced countries like the U.S. also offer excellent potential. We will operate our architectural product business so that products match the regional weather and construction customs of the host countries. That’s why, compared to fastening products, our business will take longer to globalize, but recently our product development has gotten its platform ready. YKK AP globalization will soon rise to a feverish pitch. More young YKK personnel should be involved, too. Our field is the home “openings.” If you can look from there out into the world, you’ll surely be able to see and capture a marvelous potential.
To us, this is an age of challenges, at home and abroad. In every age, someone right for the times appears to show the way. The young people are going to carry this age. So while you are still students, learn things that will give you added value as an employee, and let’s strike out together to open up a whole new era.
